南加州淡江大學校友會的成立源始於母校校長張建邦率領台北市議員訪問團到蒙市訪問蒙市議會時，由校友莊華敏、吳金生、楊曦、何惠東、陳添壽、張毅威等校友負責接待。
彼時有感於活躍在工商業各界的淡江校友雖多卻難於聯繫，因此在1981年九月由以上校友發起組織淡江大學校友會。
